Charleston Burial Ground

Charleston Burial Ground is a historic cemetery and green space in the Charleston neighborhood of southwestern Staten Island, preserving the burial sites of some of the earliest European settlers on the island.

Charleston (originally known as Kreischerville after its founder, Balthasar Kreischer) was a 19th-century industrial community centered on the Kreischer Brick Works, which produced the distinctive yellow bricks used in buildings throughout New York City.

The Kreischer Mansion, a grand Victorian house built by the brick magnate, still stands nearby and is one of the most architecturally significant surviving 19th-century buildings on Staten Island. The mansion has been associated with various legends and ghost stories.

Charleston's industrial heritage as a brick-making center connects it to the physical fabric of New York City: the yellow Kreischer bricks were used in the construction of buildings across the metropolitan area throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Charleston Burial Ground preserves the memory of the workers and families who built the brick industry that helped construct New York City, in one of the most remote and historically rich neighborhoods on Staten Island.
