Lighthouse Point is the site of the Staten Island Range Light, a historic 1912 lighthouse on one of the highest points on the island. The lighthouse, along with its companion light at the waterfront, guided ships through the Ambrose Channel into New York Harbor.
The octagonal brick lighthouse rises 90 feet above its hilltop base, creating a total elevation that makes it visible from ships far out in the Atlantic approaches to the harbor. More than a century after it was first lit, the light remains an active, automated aid to navigation maintained by the Coast Guard.
The Lighthouse Hill neighborhood surrounding the point is one of Staten Island's most architecturally diverse areas, with houses ranging from modest bungalows to the landmark Crimson Beech house designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1959, the only Wright house in New York City.
The hilltop location provides sweeping views across the island and toward the harbor, making Lighthouse Point one of the most dramatic vantage points on Staten Island.
Lighthouse Point connects visitors to the maritime navigation heritage that was essential to New York's role as the greatest port in the Americas, from a hilltop that also houses Frank Lloyd Wright's only New York City building.
