Staten Island Railway Greenway is a developing network of paths and green spaces along the Staten Island Railway, the borough's only rapid transit line, which runs 14 miles from the St. George ferry terminal to Tottenville at the southern tip of the island.
The Staten Island Railway is the only rapid transit line in the five boroughs operated by the MTA that is not part of the subway system. The line runs through every East Shore community, providing the backbone of public transportation on the island.
The greenway project aims to create walking and cycling connections along the rail corridor, linking the communities served by the railway through continuous green infrastructure. Some sections are complete while others are in planning or development.
The railway corridor passes through a cross-section of Staten Island's communities, from the urban North Shore through the suburban East Shore to the village-like neighborhoods of the South Shore, each with its own character and relationship to the rail line.
Staten Island Railway Greenway will eventually provide a continuous green corridor spanning the entire length of the island, connecting communities from the ferry terminal to the southernmost point in New York State.
