Tompkins Park is a neighborhood park in the Rosebank section of Staten Island's North Shore, providing green space in one of the borough's most diverse and historically layered neighborhoods.
Rosebank has a rich Italian-American heritage, and is the site of the National Shrine of Our Lady of Mount Carmel, which hosts one of the oldest and largest religious festivals in New York City each July.
The neighborhood is near the site where the first documented European landing on Staten Island occurred in 1524, when Giovanni da Verrazzano arrived in the Narrows. The Verrazano-Narrows Bridge, connecting Staten Island to Brooklyn, honors this explorer.
Rosebank's position on the eastern shore of Staten Island provides views across the Narrows to Brooklyn and the Atlantic Ocean beyond. The neighborhood's elevated terrain offers dramatic vantage points.
