Bronx River Forest

Bronx River Forest is a protected natural area along the Bronx River, preserving one of the most significant stretches of urban forest in New York City. The forest provides habitat for wildlife along the only freshwater river in the city.

The Bronx River's restoration from a severely polluted industrial waterway to a living ecosystem has been one of the most successful urban environmental projects in the United States. The river now supports fish, beavers, and over 200 species of birds.

The Bronx River Alliance, a nonprofit partnership, coordinates the ongoing restoration, education, and recreation programs along the river. Their work has transformed the river from a dumping ground into a community asset.

The forest canopy along the Bronx River provides ecosystem services including air filtration, stormwater management, and urban heat island mitigation for the surrounding communities.
