Yankee Stadium Heritage Field occupies the site of the original Yankee Stadium, 'The House That Ruth Built,' which stood at this location from 1923 to 2008 before the current stadium was constructed across the street.
The original Yankee Stadium hosted some of the most iconic moments in American sports history, including Babe Ruth's 60th home run in 1927, Lou Gehrig's farewell speech in 1939, Roger Maris's 61st home run in 1961, and Don Larsen's perfect game in the 1956 World Series.
When the original stadium was demolished in 2009, the site was transformed into Heritage Field, a public athletic complex with baseball diamonds, soccer fields, a running track, and recreational facilities serving the Concourse community.
The Concourse neighborhood is named for the Grand Concourse, the broad boulevard designed in 1909 as 'the Champs-Elysees of the Bronx.' The avenue's Art Deco apartment buildings from the 1920s and 1930s form one of the finest collections of Art Deco residential architecture in the world.
Yankee Stadium Heritage Field provides public recreation on the hallowed ground where Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle played, transforming the most legendary stadium site in American sports into a community park.
