Colonel Gruning Park is a two-acre park at East 174th Street and Harrod Avenue in the Soundview section of the Bronx. Named for a military officer honored for service, the park provides recreation space in a residential neighborhood in the southeastern Bronx.

Soundview is a diverse residential community with significant Puerto Rican, Dominican, African American, and West African populations. The neighborhood takes its name from its proximity to Long Island Sound, whose waters are visible from the higher ground in the area.

The park features a playground, basketball courts, and open areas. In a neighborhood where many families live in large apartment complexes and public housing developments, the park provides essential outdoor recreation space within walking distance of homes.

Soundview has been the focus of waterfront park development along the Bronx River and Soundview Creek, creating new public spaces that connect the neighborhood to its maritime geography. Colonel Gruning Park complements these waterfront spaces with inland recreation facilities.

The park serves the daily needs of a working community, providing the outdoor play and recreation space that families depend on in a neighborhood where the demand for public green space consistently exceeds the available supply.
