Grant Park

Grant Park is a 4.72-acre neighborhood park at University Avenue and West 169th Street in the Highbridge section of the western Bronx. Named for Ulysses S. Grant, the Union Army commander and 18th President of the United States, the park provides recreation space in a hillside residential neighborhood overlooking the Harlem River.

Highbridge takes its name from the High Bridge, the oldest standing bridge in New York City, which crosses the Harlem River from the Bronx to Manhattan. The bridge, built between 1837 and 1848 as part of the Croton Aqueduct system, was reopened to pedestrians in 2015 after being closed for 45 years.

The park features a playground, basketball courts, and terraced green areas that take advantage of the hillside terrain. The neighborhood's elevated position provides views toward the Manhattan skyline and the Harlem River valley below.

Highbridge has a diverse population including Dominican, Mexican, and African American communities. The neighborhood has experienced significant revitalization, with new housing and infrastructure improvements transforming areas that were once characterized by vacancy and disinvestment.

Grant Park serves a community rebuilding on the high ground above the Harlem River, providing everyday recreation in a neighborhood whose geographic elevation gives it both dramatic views and a sense of separation from the busier corridors below.
