Indian Trail Park

Indian Trail Park is a three-acre park near Van Cortlandt Park South in the Kingsbridge section of the northwestern Bronx. The park takes its name from a trail used by the native Lenape and Wappinger peoples who inhabited this area for thousands of years before European colonization.

The indigenous peoples of the Bronx used networks of trails that followed ridgelines, stream valleys, and other natural features across the landscape. Many of the borough's modern roads, including Broadway (originally the Wickquasgeck Trail), follow the routes of these ancient paths.

The park features a playground, basketball courts, and open areas serving the Kingsbridge residential community. Its proximity to Van Cortlandt Park, one of the largest parks in the city, provides residents with access to both a neighborhood park and a major natural area.

Kingsbridge is a diverse residential neighborhood with large Albanian, Dominican, Mexican, and West African populations. The neighborhood's commercial strip along Broadway is one of the most lively in the northwestern Bronx.

Indian Trail Park connects the modern Kingsbridge community to the indigenous peoples who first walked these ridgelines, preserving a name that acknowledges the thousands of years of human habitation that preceded European settlement of the Bronx.
