Tremont Park

Tremont Park is a seven-acre park along East Tremont Avenue and Third Avenue in the Tremont neighborhood of the central Bronx. The park provides athletic facilities and green space in a densely populated residential neighborhood named for the three hills (tres montes) that characterized the area's terrain.

Tremont was historically a middle-class Jewish neighborhood before transitioning to a predominantly Latino and African American community in the mid-20th century. The Cross Bronx Expressway, built through the heart of the neighborhood in the 1950s and 1960s, displaced thousands of residents and accelerated the area's decline.

The park features a swimming pool, basketball courts, a playground, and open areas. The pool provides free summer swimming in a neighborhood where access to private recreation is limited, making it one of the most important summer amenities in the central Bronx.

Tremont's revitalization has been gradual but steady, with new housing, commercial development, and infrastructure improvements slowly transforming a neighborhood that bore some of the worst impacts of Moses' highway construction and the South Bronx crisis.

Tremont Park serves a community whose resilience in the face of highway destruction and urban decline has produced a neighborhood that, while still facing challenges, has rebuilt itself into a functioning and increasingly hopeful community.
