10 Hanover Square is a Privately Owned Public Space at one of the Financial District's most historic squares, providing an outdoor plaza near India House and the former center of colonial New York's commercial life.
Hanover Square has been a center of commerce since the 18th century, when it served as the social and business hub of colonial New York. India House, the private club occupying a landmarked 1854 banking hall on the square, preserves the area's mercantile heritage.
The square was the epicenter of the Great Fire of 1835, which destroyed nearly 700 buildings in the Financial District and reshaped the area's architecture. The fire remains the most destructive in New York City history.
The POPS serves the Financial District community on a square that has witnessed pirate trials (Captain Kidd), revolutionary protests, catastrophic fires, and the rise of American capitalism over three centuries.
