111 Wall Street

111 Wall Street is a Privately Owned Public Space in the Financial District, providing an outdoor plaza along one of the most storied streets in American finance. The space serves the office workers and residents of the eastern Financial District.

Wall Street's history as the center of American capitalism stretches back to the 18th century, when the first securities were traded under a buttonwood tree near the corner of Wall and William Streets. The street's name derives from the wooden wall built by the Dutch colonists along this line to defend New Amsterdam.

The eastern end of Wall Street, near the East River, has a different character from the canyon-like western end near Broadway. The blocks near the river are more open, with views toward Brooklyn and the waterfront parks along the FDR Drive.

The Financial District's transformation into a residential neighborhood has brought families, restaurants, and neighborhood services to streets that once emptied at 5 PM. The POPS at 111 Wall Street serves this evolving community.
