1385 York Avenue is a Privately Owned Public Space in the Yorkville section of the Upper East Side, near the East River and the medical campus corridor of York Avenue.
Yorkville was historically a German and Hungarian immigrant neighborhood, with beer halls, pastry shops, and social clubs that gave the area a Central European flavor. While most of these institutions have closed, a few traces of the neighborhood's ethnic heritage survive.
The POPS serves the residential community of this eastern Upper East Side corridor, which is defined by the presence of major hospitals and the proximity to the East River waterfront. The nearby Carl Schurz Park and the East River Esplanade provide waterfront recreation.
York Avenue's residential towers house many medical professionals who work at the nearby hospitals, creating a neighborhood with an unusually high concentration of healthcare workers. The POPS serves this community.
This outdoor space provides a small public amenity in a part of the Upper East Side that is more workaday than the glamorous avenues to the west.
