2 West Loop Road is a Privately Owned Public Space on Roosevelt Island, the narrow island in the East River between Manhattan and Queens. The outdoor plaza provides public space in one of the city's most unique residential communities.
Roosevelt Island was developed as a planned residential community beginning in the 1970s, with a car-free main street, mixed-income housing, and a community-oriented design that distinguishes it from anywhere else in New York City.
The island, formerly known as Blackwell's Island and Welfare Island, has a complex history as the site of hospitals, prisons, and asylums. The ruins of the Smallpox Hospital at the island's southern tip are a designated New York City landmark.
Roosevelt Island is accessible by the iconic aerial tramway from 60th Street in Manhattan, the F subway line, and the Roosevelt Island Bridge from Queens. The Cornell Tech campus, opened in 2017, has added a major educational institution to the island.
