225 East 126th Street

225 East 126th Street is a Privately Owned Public Space in East Harlem (El Barrio / Spanish Harlem), one of the few POPS located above 96th Street on the East Side. The outdoor plaza provides public space in a neighborhood that has historically been underserved by the POPS program.

East Harlem is one of Manhattan's most culturally vibrant neighborhoods, with a deep Puerto Rican heritage visible in its murals, bodegas, restaurants, and community organizations. El Museo del Barrio on Fifth Avenue and 104th Street is the neighborhood's premier cultural institution.

The concentration of POPS in Midtown and the Upper East Side, with very few above 96th Street, reflects the uneven geography of incentive zoning in Manhattan. Development pressure has historically been concentrated in the commercial districts, leaving upper Manhattan with fewer privately created public spaces.

125th Street is the main commercial corridor of Harlem, connecting East Harlem to Central Harlem and West Harlem. The street has been the focus of major commercial development and cultural revitalization in recent decades.

This POPS is significant as one of the few incentive-zoned public spaces in East Harlem, providing public outdoor amenity in a neighborhood that deserves the same investment in public space as the wealthier districts to the south.
