375 Pearl Street is a Privately Owned Public Space near the Civic Center in Lower Manhattan, providing an outdoor plaza at a major commercial building between the Financial District and the Brooklyn Bridge approach.
Pearl Street is named for the oyster shells (parelstraat in Dutch) that once lined the East River shore at this location. The street marks the original colonial-era waterfront, before landfill pushed the shoreline several blocks east.
The Civic Center area, where New York's government buildings are concentrated, is immediately to the west. City Hall, the courthouses, and the Municipal Building all stand within a few blocks, creating one of the most institutionally dense areas in the city.
The Brooklyn Bridge approach is nearby, and the plaza serves pedestrians crossing between Manhattan and Brooklyn via the bridge's famous pedestrian walkway, one of the most popular walking routes in New York.
