450 West 33rd Street is a Privately Owned Public Space in the Hudson Yards / Penn Station area, providing an outdoor plaza near the Moynihan Train Hall, the dramatic expansion of Penn Station that opened in 2021.
The Moynihan Train Hall, housed in the former James A. Farley Post Office building across Eighth Avenue from Penn Station, transformed a magnificent Beaux-Arts postal facility into a grand train hall with a soaring skylight roof. The project was named for Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan, who championed the idea for decades.
The Farley Building's conversion represents a partial redemption for the destruction of the original Penn Station in 1963. While the original station cannot be recreated, the Moynihan Train Hall provides a worthy successor that honors the grandeur of arrival and departure in a great city.
The POPS serves the enormous daily population of commuters, travelers, and workers who use Penn Station and the surrounding transit hub. The area handles over 600,000 passengers daily across Amtrak, LIRR, and NJ Transit.
This plaza provides public space near the train hall that partially redeems one of the greatest architectural losses in American history.
