51 Astor Place is a Privately Owned Public Space at a distinctive black glass residential tower designed by Fumihiko Maki, located at one of the most culturally significant intersections in downtown Manhattan.
The building, completed in 2013, is notable for its folded glass facade that creates changing reflections and shadows throughout the day. Maki, a Pritzker Prize-winning Japanese architect, designed the building to complement the neighborhood's eclectic architectural character.
Astor Place has been a center of downtown culture for over a century, home to Cooper Union's Great Hall (where Lincoln spoke), the Public Theater (where 'Hamilton' premiered), and the Alamo spinning cube sculpture.
The East Village, immediately to the east, has been the epicenter of New York counterculture from the Beat Generation through punk rock to the contemporary art scene. The POPS serves this culturally rich community.
