7 Hanover Square

7 Hanover Square is a Privately Owned Public Space at one of the most historic squares in the Financial District, providing an outdoor plaza in the former commercial heart of colonial New York.

Hanover Square, named for the British House of Hanover, was the center of New York's commercial district in the 18th century. Captain Kidd, the famous pirate, owned property on the square before his execution in 1701.

The Great Fire of 1835, which destroyed nearly 700 buildings in the Financial District, was centered on Hanover Square. The fire reshaped the district's architecture, replacing wooden colonial buildings with the stone and brick commercial structures that survive today.

India House, a landmarked building on Hanover Square, is a private club that has occupied a former banking house since 1914. The building's elegant facade dates to 1854 and is one of the finest surviving commercial buildings from the pre-Civil War era.

This plaza provides public space on a square where pirate captains, colonial merchants, the Great Fire of 1835, and the modern financial industry all share the same historic ground.
