POPS - Outdoor Plaza

900 Third Avenue is a Privately Owned Public Space on Third Avenue at 54th Street, providing an outdoor plaza at the northern end of the avenue's Midtown commercial corridor.

Third Avenue in the mid-50s marks the final transition from Midtown's office towers to the Upper East Side's residential buildings. The POPS serves both constituencies at this boundary.

The avenue's transformation after the elevated railway's demolition in the 1950s created the commercial corridor that exists today. The 'El' had cast Third Avenue in perpetual shadow and noise; its removal opened the avenue to light, air, and modern development.

The POPS provides outdoor space at the point where Third Avenue's commercial identity yields to its residential character, a transition that occurs within just a few blocks.

This plaza marks the northern boundary of Third Avenue's Midtown commercial identity.
