95 South Street is a Privately Owned Public Space in the Financial District near the South Street Seaport, providing an outdoor plaza near the historic maritime district and the East River waterfront.
South Street was the center of New York's maritime commerce in the 19th century, when clipper ships, packet ships, and merchant vessels lined the piers along the East River. The South Street Seaport Historic District preserves a portion of this seafaring heritage.
The Seaport District has been reinvented in recent years with the opening of the Pier 17 entertainment and dining complex, which hosts rooftop concerts with the Brooklyn Bridge as a backdrop. The POPS serves visitors to this revitalized waterfront.
South Street's name records its position as the original southern waterfront of Manhattan, when the East River shoreline ran along what is now several blocks inland. Landfill extended the island eastward, leaving South Street well inland of the current waterfront.
This plaza provides public space near the maritime district where New York's identity as a great port city was forged.
