Augustus St. Gaudens Playground

Augustus St. Gaudens Playground is a neighborhood playground on Second Avenue between East 19th and East 20th Streets in the Gramercy area. The playground is named for Augustus Saint-Gaudens, one of America's greatest sculptors, who lived and worked in the neighborhood during the late 19th century.

Saint-Gaudens produced some of the most celebrated public sculptures in American history, including the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial in Boston, the Sherman Monument at Central Park's southeast corner, and the Adams Memorial in Washington, D.C. His studio was located nearby on East 36th Street.

The playground features age-appropriate play equipment, spray showers for summer cooling, and seating areas. Its location in the Gramercy area means it primarily serves families from the surrounding apartment buildings and townhouses.

The neighborhood around the playground retains much of its 19th-century character, with elegant brownstones and the private Gramercy Park nearby. The playground provides an accessible outdoor play space in a part of Manhattan where the most famous park (Gramercy Park itself) is reserved for private key-holders.
