Gutenberg Playground

Gutenberg Playground is a neighborhood playground on West 49th Street between Ninth and Tenth Avenues in Hell's Kitchen. The playground is named for Johannes Gutenberg, the 15th-century German inventor of movable type printing, whose innovation transformed the spread of knowledge and laid the groundwork for the modern information age.

The naming reflects Hell's Kitchen's historically strong connections to the printing and publishing trades. The neighborhood was once home to numerous printing shops, binderies, and publishing houses, and the International Typographical Union had a significant presence in the area during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The playground features modern play equipment, a spray shower, basketball courts, and seating areas. Its location in the heart of Hell's Kitchen places it within a neighborhood that has undergone substantial gentrification but retains a diverse residential population including families who have lived in the area for generations.

Hell's Kitchen's proximity to Times Square and the Theater District means the neighborhood serves a massive daytime population of workers and visitors in addition to its residents. The playground, however, remains primarily a neighborhood resource, used by local families rather than tourists.
