Hamilton Grange Garden

Hamilton Grange Garden surrounds the Hamilton Grange National Memorial, the 1802 country home of Alexander Hamilton, the first Secretary of the Treasury, Founding Father, and subject of the blockbuster musical 'Hamilton.'

The house was originally built on Hamilton's 32-acre estate in what was then rural Harlem, on land he purchased with the profits from his law practice. Hamilton lived in the house for only two years before his fatal duel with Aaron Burr in 1804.

The Grange was moved twice from its original location to its current site in St. Nicholas Park, where the National Park Service operates it as a museum of Hamilton's life and legacy. The garden surrounding the house features period-appropriate plantings.

Hamilton Heights, the neighborhood surrounding the Grange, is named for the Founding Father and contains some of Harlem's finest brownstone and limestone architecture. The neighborhood attracted middle-class African American families in the early 20th century.

Hamilton Grange Garden connects visitors to the country estate where Alexander Hamilton envisioned America's financial future, in a neighborhood that now bears his name and celebrates his legacy through the cultural phenomenon of Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical.
