Jacob K. Javits Playground

Jacob K. Javits Playground is a three-quarter-acre playground on West 77th Street at Amsterdam Avenue on the Upper West Side. The playground is named for Jacob Koppel Javits, who served as a United States Senator from New York from 1957 to 1981 and was one of the most prominent liberal Republicans of the 20th century.

Javits championed civil rights legislation, supported the arts and humanities, and played a key role in creating the National Endowment for the Arts and the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center on Manhattan's far west side is also named in his honor.

The playground features modern play equipment for multiple age groups, swings, a spray shower for summer cooling, and seating areas for caregivers. Its location on the Upper West Side, one of Manhattan's most family-oriented neighborhoods, ensures heavy daily use by local children.
