Penn South Playground

Penn South Playground is a playground on West 26th Street between Eighth and Ninth Avenues in Chelsea, adjacent to the Penn South cooperative housing development. The playground serves families from Penn South and the surrounding Chelsea neighborhood, providing outdoor recreation space in a densely built part of Midtown.

Penn South (officially Mutual Redevelopment Houses) is a cooperative housing complex completed in 1962 through the efforts of the International Ladies' Garment Workers' Union (ILGWU). The development was built under a state program that provided tax abatements in exchange for maintaining affordable rents, and it has remained a bastion of middle-class housing in an increasingly expensive neighborhood.

The co-op's creation by a labor union reflects an era when organized labor played a central role in housing development for working families. Penn South houses approximately 6,200 residents in 10 buildings, and the playground serves as a key outdoor amenity for families in the complex.

The playground features age-appropriate play equipment, benches, and a paved area. Its location near Chelsea Park, a larger recreation facility a few blocks away, gives families in the area multiple options for outdoor recreation within walking distance.
