Pier 26 Science Playground is an environmentally themed recreational pier in Hudson River Park featuring a tide deck, a marsh habitat, a science-focused playground, and the first public beach on the Hudson River in Manhattan.
The pier was redesigned and reopened in 2022 with a focus on environmental education, incorporating a functioning tidal marsh, rain gardens, and interactive elements that teach visitors about the Hudson River's ecology and the science of estuarine environments.
The small beach at the end of the pier provides the first public sand beach on the Manhattan side of the Hudson River, allowing visitors to touch the water and experience the river in a way that has been impossible for generations.
Hudson River Park's 550-acre waterfront park system stretches from Battery Park City to 59th Street, providing continuous waterfront access along Manhattan's West Side. Pier 26 is one of the most ecologically innovative piers in the system.
Pier 26 Science Playground reimagines what a waterfront pier can be: not just a platform over the water but a living laboratory where children and adults can learn about the river's ecology while playing on its restored shoreline.
