Riverside Park Soldiers and Sailors Monument

The Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is a 96-foot marble monument in Riverside Park honoring the Union soldiers and sailors of the Civil War, modeled after the Choragic Monument of Lysicrates in Athens and one of the grandest war memorials in New York City.

The monument, designed by Stoughton and Stoughton and dedicated in 1902, stands on a bluff overlooking the Hudson River with views across to the Palisades of New Jersey. The circular marble colonnade creates a solemn, temple-like atmosphere.

The Civil War was the deadliest conflict in American history, killing over 620,000 soldiers. New York contributed more troops to the Union cause than any other state, and the monument honors the New Yorkers who fought to preserve the Union and end slavery.

The monument's hilltop location in Riverside Park provides one of the most contemplative settings for any war memorial in the city, elevated above the river and surrounded by the trees and lawns of Olmsted's linear waterfront park.
