Sara Delano Roosevelt Park Dog Run is one of the most popular off-leash dog areas on the Lower East Side, located within the linear park that stretches from Houston to Canal Streets through the heart of the neighborhood.
Sara Delano Roosevelt Park, named for President Franklin Roosevelt's mother, was created in the 1930s by demolishing several blocks of tenement buildings. The long, narrow park replaced some of the most overcrowded housing in the city with public open space.
The Lower East Side's dog-owning population has grown significantly with the neighborhood's gentrification, and the dog run serves as a social gathering point where longtime residents and newcomers meet over their shared love of pets.
The park's linear design, stretching six blocks through the Lower East Side and Chinatown, provides a rare north-south green corridor on the East Side below Houston Street, connecting disparate neighborhoods through continuous parkland.
