Strawberry Fields is the memorial landscape in Central Park dedicated to John Lennon, who was murdered outside his home at the Dakota apartment building across Central Park West on December 8, 1980.
The centerpiece of the memorial is the 'Imagine' mosaic, a circular black-and-white tile design donated by the city of Naples, Italy, set into the pathway. The mosaic is one of the most visited and photographed spots in Central Park, perpetually decorated with flowers, candles, and tributes.
The 2.5-acre landscape was designated a 'Garden of Peace' by more than 120 countries, each of which donated plants and trees. Yoko Ono, Lennon's widow, funded the design and maintenance of the memorial garden.
The Dakota, the landmark 1884 apartment building where Lennon lived and died, is visible from Strawberry Fields across Central Park West. The building's Gothic silhouette provides a somber backdrop to the memorial.
Strawberry Fields draws visitors from around the world who come to pay tribute to John Lennon, leaving flowers on the Imagine mosaic and sitting quietly in a garden that has become one of the most emotionally resonant public spaces in the world.
