Travers Park

Travers Park is a nearly 2-acre neighborhood park on 34th Avenue between 77th and 78th Streets in Jackson Heights, Queens. Named for Thomas J. Travers, a Jackson Heights community leader, the park provides green space in one of the most diverse and vibrant neighborhoods in the world.

Jackson Heights is famous for its extraordinary ethnic diversity: the neighborhood is home to significant South Asian, Latin American, Filipino, Tibetan, and Nepali communities, among many others. The commercial strips along Roosevelt Avenue, 37th Avenue, and 74th Street feature restaurants and shops representing cuisines and cultures from around the globe.

The park features a playground and seating areas. Its location along 34th Avenue, which has been the subject of an open-streets initiative that closes the road to through traffic and creates expanded pedestrian space, has enhanced the park's role as a neighborhood gathering place.

Jackson Heights was originally developed in the 1910s and 1920s as a planned garden apartment community, with shared interior gardens and cooperative ownership. The neighborhood's architectural heritage of garden apartments and pre-war buildings has been designated a historic district.

Travers Park serves the daily recreation needs of one of the most culturally rich neighborhoods in the world, a place where children speaking dozens of languages play together and the playground serves as a meeting ground for the global village that Jackson Heights has become.
