Marble Hill Playground

Marble Hill Playground serves the Marble Hill neighborhood, the only part of Manhattan that is physically connected to the Bronx mainland rather than to Manhattan Island, creating one of the most geographically unusual communities in New York City.

Marble Hill was originally part of Manhattan Island, connected by a narrow strip of land at Spuyten Duyvil Creek. In 1895, the Harlem River Ship Canal was cut through the creek, separating Marble Hill from the rest of Manhattan. When the original creek was filled in, Marble Hill became attached to the Bronx.

Despite being physically in the Bronx, Marble Hill is legally and politically part of the Borough of Manhattan and New York County. Residents vote in Manhattan elections, use Manhattan zip codes, and are served by Manhattan community boards.

The playground serves this geographically anomalous community, where residents live on the Bronx mainland but are officially Manhattanites, creating a unique civic identity.
